What about other species? (2 of 2)

Attempts to score pain in rabbits have been relatively unsuccessful as the behaviour of individual animals was very variable. This may relate to rabbits masking signs of pain in the presence of potential predators (us!).

This movie shows a rabbit after ovariohysterectomy. The film was taken with an observer present. The animal shows almost no movement.

In contrast, this movie was taken using a remotely controlled camera. The rabbit shows a series of activities that may be related to post-operative pain. These include wincing, abdominal contractions and back arching.
